Heat Advisory

The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for much of southern New England as temperatures are expected to approach triple digits.

A heat advisory means temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a situation in which heat illnesses are possible.

Temperatures in Boston, Springfield, Mass., Hartford, Conn. and Providence, R.I. are expected to reach into the upper 90s and with dew points approaching 70, the heat index could feel more than 100 Tuesday afternoon.

Coastal areas including Newport, R.I. and Barnstable, Mass. should be much lower temperatures, in the mid to upper 80s.

The service says excessive heat claims more lives each year than floods, lightning, tornadoes and hurricanes combined.

People are advised to avoid prolonged periods of time outdoors.
