A Torrington man is dead after being shot by a state trooper alongside Route 8 at exit 43.

Police say a trooper came upon the man, who was on foot,  after police had received calls that a man armed with a knife was alongside the highway.

Police say he tried to talk to the man,  who charged at him with the weapon.  He backed off , but the man with the knife kept advancing  then fired his weapon.

The man was pronounced dead at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital.

Route 8 northbound remains closed between exits 42 and 44.

The Eastern District Crime Squad and Litchfield County State’s Attorney are investigating.  The Office of the Chief State Medical Examiner will conduct an autopsy.

State police did not immediately identify either the man with the knife or the trooper.  They say there were witnesses in vehicles on Route 8 who saw the shooting.
