NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) _ Two church leaders who helped bring attention to police abuse of Latino residents of East Haven are being honored by a national civil rights group.

The Rev. James Manship, a priest at St. Rose of Lima Church in New Haven, and pastoral council leader Angel Fernandez Chavero, have been recognized by the National Conference of La Raza.

The award to be presented Tuesday at the group’s annual conference in Las Vegas honors an individual or organization that has made “significant contributions to promoting the interests of Hispanic Americans.”

An investigation by the U.S. Justice Department concluded last year that the East Haven Police Department engaged in a pattern of discrimination against Latino residents.

In January, four officers were arrested on federal charges including deprivation of rights and obstruction of justice.
