A former University of Connecticut football player was flown to a hospital near  Allentown, Pennsylvania,  over the weekend after a head-on accident in Tamaqua, in eastern Pennslyvani.

Police say 23-year-old Phillip “Mike”Ryan was traveling northbound on Route 309 when he crossed the double yellow line to make a turn,  but was travelling at what was described as a high rate of speed, and entered the opposite lane too early,  colliding head-on with a southbound vehicle driven by a Tamaqua man.  Both drivers and a passenger in Ryan’s vehicle were taken to hospitals following the accident,  which required extrication.

Tamaqua police say charges are pending.

Ryan, who is from Tamaqua,  is a graduate of Marian Catholic High School in Tamaqua,  where he helped lead the school to a state playoff berth.   He played offensive tackle for the Huskies and was a first tean All-Big East selection in 2010
