A former University of Connecticut football player was flown to a hospital near Allentown, Pennsylvania, over the weekend after a head-on accident in Tamaqua, in eastern Pennslyvani.
Police say 23-year-old Phillip “Mike”Ryan was traveling northbound on Route 309 when he crossed the double yellow line to make a turn, but was travelling at what was described as a high rate of speed, and entered the opposite lane too early, colliding head-on with a southbound vehicle driven by a Tamaqua man. Both drivers and a passenger in Ryan’s vehicle were taken to hospitals following the accident, which required extrication.
Tamaqua police say charges are pending.
Ryan, who is from Tamaqua, is a graduate of Marian Catholic High School in Tamaqua, where he helped lead the school to a state playoff berth. He played offensive tackle for the Huskies and was a first tean All-Big East selection in 2010
