A 36-year veteran of the Springfield Police force has been shot and killed  while on duty.

Police say Officer Kevin Ambrose was escorting  a woman and her ex-boyfriend to her apartment. 29-year-old Charlene Mitchell of Springfield had obtained a restraining order against 35-year-old Shawn Bryan of New York state,  but the judge had allowed Bryan —  who was a New York Correction officer — to pick up some of his belongings.

Police say when the three got to the apartment, Bryan shoved the woman inside and slammed the door on Officer Ambrose.  When Ambrose tried to get in,  Bryan shot him through the door. . .  then opened the door and shot the policeman two more times.

Police say Bryan then went back into the apartment and shot Mitchell in the head.  She is in critical condition.

Police later found Bryan in his vehicle,  suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.  He was pronounced dead at Baystate Medical center.

Officer Ambrose was married,  with two children.
