First Selectman: Somers Mill Fire A Case Of Arson

The top town official in Somers says a massive weekend fire at an abandoned mill in the Somersville section of town was no accident. First Selectman Lisa Pellegrini says State Police investigators believe it is a case of arson.

The blaze at the old Somersville Manufacturing Company Mill on Maple Street was reported just before 2:30 a.m. Saturday.

Pellegrini says the mill had been vacant for decades and had no electricity.

Crews from a number of surrounding communities responded to help Somers firefighters battle the blaze and crews remained at the scene for most of the weekend dousing hot spots.

There were no reports of injuries and state energy and environmental protection officials say the building was empty and there are “minimal” environmental concerns with the site.
