A Cheshire man who has blogged about his wait for a heart transplant is up and out of bed today, after receiving the needed organ.
Colby Salerno’s mother, Kelly Salerno says at first she didn’t believe the surgery was really going to happen.
“I’m feeling shocked, happy, sad and scared,” Kelly Salerno said. “The most important feeling right now is elated. I am so happy my son has been given the gift he has waited 166 days for.”
The next few days will be key, as doctors check to make sure the 24-year-old’s body accepts the heart. He could go home in about two weeks.
Kelly Salerno says all she knows for sure about the organ donor is that he was 18-years-old.
“I am sad for the family,” Kelly Salerno said. “We are so grateful to the family, and all of his loved ones, for giving our son the gift of life.”
She said she would like to speak with the family of the donor later, but right now she says her focus is on keeping her son healthy.
Doctors say the heart was brought to the hospital quickly, because the donor was nearby. Eighteen-year-old Jesus Vega died after a recent incident on a basketball court in Bristol. His family says they believe his heart was used in the operation.
