RI Statehouse Memorial To Soldiers Vandalized

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island Lt. Gov. Elizabeth Roberts says an area at the Statehouse set aside to honor soldiers has been vandalized.

She said police contacted her to tell her that the Garden of Heroes and memorial stone were vandalized on Memorial Day.

Maria Tocco, a spokeswoman for the lieutenant governor, said a memorial stone was marred by graffiti and a portion of the garden was damaged.

She says Roberts has taken on the role of garden custodian.

On Friday, the lieutenant governor participated in a wreath-laying at the Garden of Heroes to honor military veterans. The area of the Statehouse lawn dedicated in 2005 to service members who have died since the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
