Ten-year Prison Sentence In Navy Sailor’s Death

NEW LONDON, Conn. (AP) _ A Connecticut man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for killing a Navy sailor in a 2009 bar fight.

Thirty-eight-year-old Eduardo Rosario of Groton was sentenced Monday in New London Superior Court on manslaughter and assault convictions stemming from the fight that killed Michael Halpert, who was stationed at the Groton submarine base.

Authorities said Rosario punched Halpert and another man at a Preston bar, after Halpert and three other sailors accused him of stealing $15 from the bar’s counter. Halpert died of a brain injury.

Rosario’s lawyer had said his client acted in self-defense. Rosario had faced up to 14 years in prison under a plea deal he made.

Rosario cried as he told Halpert’s family during Monday’s hearing that he didn’t mean to hurt Halpert.
