A retired East Haven Police detective is under arrest by state police, charged in connection with missing cash from the evidence room of the police department.
State police say they began their investigation about a month and a half ago, after the cash was reported missing. The investigation turned up 40-year-old Youth Division Detective Michael D’Amato of East Haven as a suspect, they obtained an arrest warrant, and Thursday afternoon , D’Amato turned himself in and was charged with second degree larceny and is scheduled. He’s scheduled for a court appearance next week.
D’Amato had been scheduled to retire last December.
It’s the latest in a series of personnel problems to hit the department. In January, the FBI arrested four officers on charges of harassing and discriminating against Latinos. Later in January, Chief Leonard Gallo resigned.
