Modified Heimlich Saves Choking Shih-Tzu

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) _ A West Hartford police officer is being credited with saving a choking dog by using a modified version of the Heimlich maneuver.

Police say Officer Tom Lazure responded Monday to a report that a family pet was choking and had stopped breathing.

Police say Lazure was able to position himself and perform a Heimlich thrust on the Shih-Tzu , which dislodged a raw-hide treat that had become stuck in the dog’s airway.

Lazure, who received some basic veterinary training as a K9 officer, was able to pull the treat out of the dog’s mouth and get the dog breathing again.

The 10-year old Shih-Tzu, whose name was not released, is reported to be in good health and is expected to make a full recovery.
