Support for Online, Election-Day Voter Registration

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) _ Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy and others are calling for support for bills that would expand access to voter registration and preserve voting rights.

Malloy, joined by Secretary of State Denise Merrill, U.S. Rep. John Larson and Martin Luther King III, spoke in favor of the proposals at Monday at the state Capitol.

The proposed legislation would create an online voter registration system, allow for Election Day voter registration and guard against voter intimidation.

A Constitutional Amendment expanding absentee voting passed the Legislature but did not pass by a wide enough margin to appear on the ballot in November.

They come following an election task force’s recommendations, which were presented earlier this session.

Connecticut citizens will vote in the Republican presidential primary on Tuesday.
