State police are investigating separate incidents in Meriden in which suspects died early Saturday morning. Around 1:45 a.m., officers were called to 10 Grove Court on the report that someone was breaking items with a hammer. State police say officers found 48-year-old resident Angel Hiraldo on the front porch of the home with a hammer in his hand, and refused to drop it.
Meriden police used a Taser on Hiraldo after they say he began to approach officers with the hammer. Shortly after being tazed, Hiraldo began having trouble breathing. He was taken to MidState Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
Less than an hour after the first incident, Meriden officers responded to 10 Maple Branch for a violent disturbance. They say they found a man with a pair of scissors who charged at the officers. One officer used a Taser on the man, but police say it was not effective. An officer then shot the man, who was taken to MidState Medical Center and pronounced dead.
The second man’s name has not been released by police. No one else was injured in either incident. The officers involved in the incidents have been assigned to administrative duties while state police crime squads investigate.
