Otis To Install Elevators At Rio’s World Cup Stadium

FARMINGTON, Conn. (AP) _ Otis Elevator’s Brazil business has announced a contract to install 21 elevators and escalators at a high-profile Rio de Janeiro stadium hosting the World Cup soccer games in 2014.

The Farmington, Conn.-based subsidiary of United Technologies Corp. said Wednesday the equipment will be installed at Maracanã Stadium, the site of the 2014 FIFA World Cup final championship match and 2016 Summer Olympics opening and closing ceremonies. The value of the contract was not disclosed.

Otis is set to open a factory in São Paulo this year, manufacturing elevators and other products for the South American market. Brazil’s emerging market could one day be as large as the U.S. market, Otis President Pedro Baranda said.

Maracanã Stadium was the site of the deciding match of the World Cup in 1950 when host Brazil lost to Uruguay.
