Puerto Rican Nationalist Seeks Release On Bond

Associated Press

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) – A 66-year-old Puerto Rican nationalist is asking to be released on bond as he awaits trial in a 1983 Connecticut robbery.

Norberto Gonzalez Claudio says in a federal court filing that the conditions of his detention at the Donald W. Wyatt Detention Facility in Rhode Island are restricting his communication with family and political advisers. The request was filed Sunday with the U.S. District Court in Hartford.

Gonzalez is accused of aiding the 1983 robbery of $7 million from an armored car depot in West Hartford that was orchestrated by Los Macheteros, a militant group dedicated to independence for Puerto Rico. He was captured by the FBI in Puerto Rico in May 2011.

A spokesman for the Connecticut U.S. attorney’s office says prosecutors will respond to the motion in court.
