Tire Flies Off Humvee On I-95, Kills Woman

HOPKINTON, R.I. (AP) _ A Delaware woman has died after the Acura she was driving on Interstate 95 in Rhode Island was struck by a tire that broke loose from a Humvee traveling in the opposite direction.

State police Lt. William Jamieson said that 70-year-old Carolyn Handy Letts, of Wilmington, Del., was pronounced dead at the crash site Tuesday morning. Her husband William Letts, who was a passenger, was taken to Rhode Island Hospital with facial lacerations.

Jamieson says Carolyn Letts was driving southbound when a tire from a Humvee traveling north on I-95 broke off and struck her windshield.

Jamieson says the driver of the Humvee, 54-year-old Peter Reynolds, of Groton, Conn., was not injured.

Jamieson says police have impounded both vehicles and are investigating how the tire broke off the Humvee.
