NEWINGTON, Conn. (AP and WTIC Staff) _ Newington officials say an early morning house fire has killed a woman and her autistic daughter.
Firefighters responded to the home on Vineyard Avenue shortly before 2 a.m. Thursday and found the two victims in the same bedroom. Authorities say the woman was in her 40s and her daughter was in her late teens or early 20s.
Authorities haven’t named the victims yet. The daughter was pronounced dead at the scene and the mother was pronounced dead at a hospital.
The mother and daughter were found together in a front bedroom.
Officials say no smoke detectors were found in the home. They say it appears the fire began in a bedroom in the back section of the house. It’s not clear how it started.
Officials from the state fire marshal’s office have been called in to help local authorities investigate.
A woman who lived next door described seeing flames touching her house, then getting her children out of her house, because she was afraid the fire might spread.
Neighbors said the single mother worked hard to take care of her daughter, and other people who lived nearby helped her take care of her yard.
