‘Batman’ Threatens On Facebook To Blow Up Hospital If He Doesn’t Get $1 Million
BAR HARBOR, Maine (CBS Connecticut/AP) — A caped crusader who dresses as Batman in Maine’s Bar Harbor says he’s learned his lesson after an April Fool’s prank led to his arrest on a terrorizing charge.
Christopher Schwartz, known as “Bar Harbor Batman,” posted on his Facebook page on April 1 that he would blow up a hospital unless he was paid $1 million.
“I demand payment of 1 million Dollars or I will Blow up the Hospital,” Schwartz posted on his Facebook. “Once the funds are secured, Private Message me for Further Instruction.”
The posting got him arrested Sunday.
Officer Thom Tardiff told the Bangor Daily News that Schwartz told police he was kidding, then proceeded to ask officers if they’d brought the money.
“In the era we live in, you can’t take them lightly,” Tardiff told the Daily News.
Tardiff has asked Schwartz to take down the post, yet it still remains up.
“I told him to take it down,” Tardiff told the paper. “Obviously, he hasn’t.”
Schwartz, who lives two blocks away from Mount Desert Island Hospital in Bar Harbor, is known for dressing as Batman and dancing with his boombox. He apologized on his Facebook page for “any panic or mass hysteria” that he caused.
“It was a demoralizing and humiliating experience,” Schwartz told the Daily News. “I feel that my civil liberties have been violated.”
The Hancock County District Attorney’s Office will decide whether to file the charge in court.
