HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) _ Gov. Dannel P. Malloy says he discussed improvements to the submarine base in Groton during a meeting with Navy Secretary Ray Mabus.
Monday’s meeting at the Pentagon came as Connecticut officials monitor the possibility of a new Base Realignment and Closure process. The sub base was targeted in a BRAC process in 2005 but officials, business owners and civic groups beat back recommendations to shut it down.
Malloy says he highlighted the state’s investment in base infrastructure and assured the secretary that Connecticut’s support for Naval Submarine Base New London remains strong.
The base accounts for an estimated 15,000 jobs and has a $4.5 billion annual economic impact on the state’s economy.
