STORRS, Conn. (AP) – Shuttle buses at the University of Connecticut are now giving verbal warnings to pedestrians as the vehicles round corners on campus.

When bus wheels pass a certain degree during a turn, an automated voice is broadcast through speakers on the outside of the bus with the alert “Pedestrians, bus is turning.”

School spokesman Mike Kirk says the system, which began operating Monday, came in response to a fatal accident last March in which 20-year-old student David Plamondon of Westminster, Mass., was struck and killed by a shuttle bus while in a crosswalk.

As many as 13 shuttle buses are in operation during weekdays on the Storrs campus.
