Landlord Sentenced To 18 Months For Causing Death Of Trespasser

DANBURY, Conn. (AP) _ A prominent Danbury property owner has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for causing the death of an undocumented immigrant from Ecuador during a confrontation in November 2009.

The News-Times of Danbury reports that a Superior Court judge imposed the sentence Wednesday on 52-year-old Joseph DaSilva Jr. of New Milford. The multimillionaire owner of the Palace Theater and several other Danbury properties pleaded guilty in January to negligent homicide and assault.

Police say DaSilva pushed 42-year-old Luis Encalada down a staircase at an apartment complex DaSilva owns, after catching Encalada and two other men trespassing. Encalada later died at Danbury Hospital.
DaSilva apologized for his actions Wednesday.

A lawyer for Encalada’s family says Encalada had 11 children in Ecuador with his wife and a common-law wife.
