Immigrant Group Calls For East Haven Mayor’s Resignation

EAST HAVEN, Conn. (AP) _ An immigrant advocates’ group is demanding that East Haven Mayor Joseph Maturo Jr. resign over comments he made after four town police officers were charged with violating the rights of Latinos.

The New Haven Register reports that  a dozen or so members of Community of Immigrants of East Haven went to Maturo’s office on Thursday to deliver a list of demands including that he resign. Maturo’s staff accepted the letter because the mayor is taking some time off.

Maturo drew heavy criticism and national media attention when he said in January that he might “eat tacos” when asked what he would do for the local Latino community after the FBI arrested the four officers, who are accused of routinely harassing and abusing Latinos.

Maturo has apologized for the comment.

If it is this easy to get a politician to resign, why hasn’t it happened with ‘Executive Orders’ Malloy?

This minority group thinks it has the right to impose their will over the will of the majority who elected a politician into office because their feelings were hurt. The reporter who initiated this controversy with a biased question hasn’t been criticized for that question. Citizens who believe the reporters question was either valid or pointless can have their say in the next mayoral election.

While I support the right of citizens to voice their opinions, such speech and actions need to be civil and not disruptive to the functioning of city government. And it may not interfere with the enjoyment of citizens property or security in East Haven.
