More Questions Than Answers – The regular season is over for the UConn Women and now they sit and stew until Sunday, when they begin Big East Tournament play against most likely Rutgers or Cincinnati as the three seed in the final game of the quarter-final round. Last night’s loss to Notre Dame exposed all the things that have plagued the Huskies all season. Yes the turnover number was down, but the percentage of points off the mistakes were higher last night. 25 – 2nd chance points is absolutely unacceptable, and again, the game closed with a drought even worse than the one that ended the game in South Bend January 7th as UConn scored just 1 point in the last 8 minutes plus..
And I’m sure by now, you’ve either seen or heard the no holds barred comments of Geno Auriemma after the game last night. No toughness, not paying attention, and no improvement since game one with Notre Dame. All these things have me puzzled. I thought student athletes played at UConn for Geno to be the best they can be..I know this, Stephanie Dolson was singled out in a positive matter last night for her efforts on the offensive end especially. Playing with more confidence and energy than she has all season. Luckily she has a good support group around her and can lean on a couple of ex post players now broadcasters in Kara and Rebecca who reminded her they’ve been through what she is going thru. She’ll be a key figure if UConn is to have a good run not only in the Big East Tourney, but the NCAA’s.
Onto the team that won the Big East last night from South Bend. Say what you will, this team is primed and ready for March/Early April as the Irish played with poise even down 25-18. Two factors will determine if Notre Dame wins a second National Championship. Devereaux Peters play in the post and how much Kayla McBride will produce as the #3 or 4 option in an already dangerous starting 5. I still think they are the best “team” in the country, question is, does the best Center and equally talented point guard in Waco bring the Big 12 back to back titles ? Only time will tell.
The Big East Tournament begins Friday at the XL…POY has to be Sklyar Diggins..Keleena Mosquesda Lewis the FOY and Coach of the Year ? If I had a vote, Kim Barnes Arico of St. John’s. Who may very well get a 2nd look at UConn Monday as long as they both win Sunday. No matter what, the Irish await Tuesday…They are indeed the favorite to win their first BET Title.
The big question for UConn is, too late to right the ship ? Even I can’t answer that…Not even sure Geno and the staff can…Players need to actually listen to the staff to achieve that..Cross your fingers 🙂
