Daughter Charged With Stealing Social Security Payments To Her Dead Parents

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) _ An East Hartford woman has admitted stealing more than $180,000 in Social Security benefit payments that were made to her dead parents.

Federal prosecutors said Thursday that 53-year-old Bozena Grabala pleaded guilty in New Haven to theft of government property.

Authorities say Grabala’s mother began receiving monthly Social Security retirement payments in 1984 and died in 2000. Her father began receiving payments in 1983 and died in 2006.

Prosecutors say from November 2006 to August 2011, Grabala continued to receive, and use, monthly Social Security payments intended for her mother and father in the total amount of $186,608.

Grabala faces up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $390,000 when she is sentenced May 10.
