Interstate 95 northbound closed for part of the afternoon rush hour, between exits 88 and 89 in Groton, the result of an accident involving three cars and an oil tanker, which overturned. Then a single lane of traffic was opened.
The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection says the tanker has a 24-hundred gallon capacity, and they estimate about half the cargo has leaked. Crews are working to stop the leak, off-load the remaining cargo, and remove the tanker. Then they’ll have to remove contaminated soil alongside the highway. A spokesman says no waterways appear to be at risk.
