NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) _ A Yale University quarterback who made headlines when he chose to play in last November’s Yale-Harvard game instead of interviewing for a Rhodes Scholarship is rebutting a report that a sexual misconduct allegation cost him a chance at the scholarship.

A statement released by quarterback Patrick Witt’s representative says he learned of the allegation only after he stated publicly he would play in the game.

The New York Times reported Thursday that Rhodes suspended Witt’s candidacy upon learning an acquaintance had unofficially acused him of sexual assault.

Witt’s representative, Mark Magazu, said Friday that Witt’s candidacy was never suspended. He says the acquaintance did not file a formal complaint or police report, and that Yale closed the matter with Witt in good standing.

Yale and Rhodes Trust officials would not comment.
