BROCKTON, Mass. (AP) _ An assistant to Connecticut’s chief medical examiner faces perjury charges in Massachusetts after allegedly lying while testifying as an expert witness for prosecutors.
Dr. Frank Evangelista was arraigned in Brockton Superior Court in August on charges of perjury and intimidation of a witness. He pleaded not guilty and was released on personal recognizance. The Connecticut Post reported the charges Tuesday.
The case against Evangelista will be handled by Bristol County prosecutors to avoid a conflict of interest.
A spokesman for Bristol prosecutors said the perjury charge is based on allegations Evangelista lied during his testimony in a murder case. The intimidation charge alleges he misled authorities and obstructed justice.
Evangelista’s lawyer, the medical examiner’s office and the Connecticut chief state’s attorney’s office did not return calls Tuesday seeking comment.
