HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) _ Connecticut’s hotline to file unemployment claims is opening for extra hours to handle a flood of new calls.
The state Department of Labor says its TeleBenefits call centers will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. each Saturday throughout January.
Labor Commissioner Glenn Marshall says early January is traditionally the busiest time for unemployment claims because of seasonal layoffs in retail establishments, construction and other industries.
Marshall says they’ve brought in extra workers to help callers who need to speak with a customer representative, and that the centers also have been staying open until 6 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays.
People who do not need to speak with a customer service representative are encouraged to file their claims through the agency’s online system, which is available 24 hours at http://www.ct.gov/dol.
