The University of Connecticut is launching a search for a new athletic director. UConn President Susan Herbst called the job “one of the most important positions at the University,” and named a Georgia search firm to help an eight-member committee make its selection. Interim athletic director Paul Pendergast will co-chair the search committee, after taking his name out of consideration for the permanent AD post.
Herbst said the new athletic director should be named within three months.
Pendergast will remain with the university, working with the UConn Foundation, and focusing on fundraising for the UConn Health Center and the Division of Athletics. He’ll also manage UConn’s outreach efforts and relations with the business community, alumni, partners, donors and fans.
In addition to Pendergast, the other members of the search committee are the other co-chair, Carol Polifroni, Professor of Nursing, and Chair of the President’s Advisory Committee for Athletics; Andy Bessette, Executive Vice President and CAO, The Travelers Companies; Scott Brown, Professor of Educational Psychology and NCAA Faculty Athletics Representative; Andrea Dennis-LaVigne owner, Bloomfield Animal Hospital; Head Baseball Coach Jim Penders; the vice-chairman of the UConn Board of Trustees, Tom Ritter, a partner in Brown, Rudnick LLP, and the Chief of Staff in Herbst’s office, Rahel Rubin.
Former athletic director Jeff Hathaway Hathaway retired from UConn in September after Herbst ordered an outside review of his handling of the department. He now works as a consultant for the Big East.
