Wallingford police say they’ve received dozens of complaints about fraudulent purchases made on debit card — even though the victims said they still had their cards in their possession.
Police say most of the victims didn’t even know about the problem until their banks notified them about suspicious activity .
Police say banking officials tell them the debit card information may have been stolen in recent months when the rightful owners used the cards for legitimate retail transactions in Wallingford. They’re working with merchants and banks to learn how much the fraud has spread, and to determine how it started.
They encouraged debit card holders to check their accounts regularly, and to notify the bank of any suspicious transactions.
Police released security camera video from a Greenwich drugstore where they believe one of the fraudulent cards was used.
