Groups Protest GOP Redistricting Plan

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) – Local representatives from and Democracy for America are submitting a petition with nearly 1,900 signatures, opposing a Republican proposal to move the city of Bridgeport out of the 4th congressional district as part of a new redistricting plan.

The group said Monday that moving the state’s largest city into the 3rd District, which includes New Haven, would dilute the voice of Bridgeport residents, who’ve been part of the 4th for almost 200 years. Tiffany Mellers, a leader from Bridgeport, said it would also be a step backward for all minority voices currently living in the 4th.

The legislative committee charged with redrawing congressional district lines faces a noontime deadline on Wednesday – set by the Connecticut State Supreme Court – to come up with a plan.
