New Haven Police Intercept Package Filled With Cans of Cocaine
A New Haven man is under arrest after members of the New Haven Police Narcotics Unit intercepted a package filled with cocaine that was mailed from Puerto Rico.
Police arrested 26-year-old William Suarez-Claudio of 63 Market Street after he accepted delivery of the parcel on Saturday. According to police, a kilogram of cocaine was packaged in sealed cans labelled for red kidney beans. The beans had been removed and chunks of cocaine, wrapped in plastic and covered with petroleum jelly, were inside the cans with water.
Police say Suarez-Claudio attempted to flee with the package out the back of the building as police arrived with a search and seizure warrant at the front door of his apartment. Suarez-Claudio was charged with possession with intent to sell 10 ounces or more of narcotics and possession of narcotics with intent to sell within 1,500 feet of a school.
According to police, the cocaine has a street value of more than $100,000.
