$20 Million Endowment For New Haven Institutions

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — The descendant of a noted Connecticut family has bequeathed $20 million to the Community Foundation for Greater New Haven.

Richard L. English, who died last summer, included significant funding to the New Haven Symphony Orchestra and New Haven Museum. Other beneficiaries include Neighborhood Music School and Connecticut Yankee Boy Scouts of America.

Foundation officials say it’s the largest bequest in its 83-year history.

English was a descendant of 19th century Gov. James English. His paternal grandfather, Henry English, was a founding member of the New Haven Symphony Orchestra.
