Pedestrian Killed In Durham, Driver Charged With Operating Under Influence

State police say a driver is charged with operating under influence of alcohol or drugs after a fatal accident Wednesday afternoon on Route 17 north of the  Route 147 intersection in Durham.

Police say 69-year-old Joan Leighton-Smith of Durham was crossing Route 17 in the rain  shortly before 5 p.m.when she was hit by the a pickup truck driven by 57-year-old Irving Johnson of Durham.  The accident remains under investigation.
