East Haven Mayor Loses Recount By 34 Votes

EAST HAVEN, Conn. (AP)   The two-term East Haven mayor known for donating her kidney to a Facebook friend has lost her seat to the former longtime mayor of the same town.
The New Haven Register reports that Democrat April Capone lost to Republican Joe Maturo Jr. by 34 votes in Saturday’s recount.
Capone and Maturo are familiar foes. In 2007, Capone beat the five-term incumbent by a 25-vote margin. Maturo had held the seat since 1997.
Capone made national news in April 2010 after revealing that she had donated a kidney to a constituent. Carlos Sanchez had posted a status update on Facebook in 2009, saying his kidneys were failing because of diabetes. Capone was running for her second term as mayor at the time but kept details of the transplant a secret.
