NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (AP) _ Police in Massachusetts are investigating the discovery of a dead body in the New Bedford home where a man arrested after a long police chase in Connecticut lived.

Thomas Gardner of New Bedford was arrested Wednesday in Westport, Conn., following a chase in which police say he drove a stolen car at speeds of more than 100 miles per hour.

Later, New Bedford police went to a for-sale home where the 35-year-old Gardner lived and found the body of 36-year-old Mike Duarte.

Gardner was held on $1 million bond in Connecticut on Thursday. He did not appear in court because he is being treated for a broken wrist.

The Bristol, Mass., district attorney’s office says the cause of Duarte’s death remains under investigation. Gardner has not been charged with murder.

Duarte had been missing since Saturday.
