Two Men Charged With Stealing Transformer

Two Enfield men are under arrest on charges that they stole a downed electrical transformer from a street in Enfield Tuesday.

South Windsor Police say Robert Simmons, 46, and Richard Simmons, 47, were stopped on Route 5 in their town after a Connecticut Light and Power crew was following the pickup truck the men were using to haul the transformer.

Police allege the men intended to sell the transformer for scrap value. The item is valued at $4,000 bond, said authorities.

Police say the transformer contained remnants of oil that contains PCBs, a potentially toxic chemical. The men spilled the oil in their truck and on their clothing, said authorities.

Both men are charged with third-degree larceny and are free on a promise to appear in court.
