ECSU State’s Highest Minority Faculty

WILLIMANTIC, Conn. (AP) _ A new study of faculty at universities nationwide says Eastern Connecticut State University has the largest percentage of minority teachers among Connecticut colleges and universities.

The U.S. Department of Education review shows 26 percent of Eastern’s faculty members are black, Hispanic or from other underrepresented minority groups.

Eastern President Elsa Nunez said they are particularly proud of the Willimantic-based university achievement. The school has several programs to support and recruit minority students, including partnerships with inner-city high schools.

The figures showed 16 percent of the faculties of Yale and Central Connecticut State were minorities. The University of Connecticut and Southern Connecticut State both had 15 percent, and Western Connecticut State had 14 percent.

Among two-year colleges, Capital Community College in Hartford had the highest figure at 23 percent.
