UConn Students Can Check Out Bicycles From Library

STORRS, Conn. (AP) _ University of Connecticut students can now check out bicycles from the campus library.

The program, which began this semester, is similar to one used at UConn and several other universities in the 1960s. The school ended that program when a number of the bicycles were stolen or ended up at the bottom of Mirror Lake on campus.

School officials say this time they have more safety measures in place. Students wishing to borrow one of the 20 available bicycles, will have to swipe their UConn ID at the library, and the bikes must be returned by 5 p.m.

Students checking out bicycles will receive a bike lock and will be offered a helmet. They also must sign a waiver accepting responsibility for damage or loss of the bicycle.
