Dems to Oppose Proposed Heating Aid Cuts

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) _ Top Connecticut Democrats and community leaders are set to speak out against proposed cuts to a federal home heating aid program.

Congressman Chris Murphy and state House Speaker Chris Donovan are scheduled to lead a news conference Friday at the state Capitol in Hartford about proposed cuts to the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program.

Murphy plans to tell stories about Connecticut families who depend on the program and would have a difficult time paying their heating bills without it.

Congress is considering cutting the program by as much as half, according to some estimates, to help deal with budget deficits. If that happens, Connecticut’s share would fall from just under $103 million to about $51 million.
