HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) _ A new report finds that Providence and Hartford areas have some of the highest unemployment rates in the country for Hispanics.

The capital areas of Rhode Island and Connecticut ranked first and second out of 38 large metropolitan areas in the study released Monday by the Economic Policy Institute, a Washington-based think tank.

The unemployment rate for Hispanics last year was 25.2 percent in Providence and 23.5 percent in Hartford. Hispanics in the Hartford area were also 3.4 times as likely as whites to be unemployed, while Hispanics in Providence were 2.5 times as likely as whites to be unemployed.

The Hartford and Providence areas also had the largest increases in Hispanic unemployment from 2009 to 2010 out of all the areas surveyed.
