HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) _ An audit of the Connecticut Department of Social Services shows the agency has made monthly benefits payments to welfare recipients after they’ve already died.
State auditors released the review on Thursday. It covers the fiscal years that ended June 30, 2008 and 2009.
Auditors reviewed benefit histories in June 2009 of recipients whose cases were closed after death. They found that for eight out of the 20 recipients tested, monthly benefits totaling $1,457 were still issued after the people had died.
Auditors also found that in all 20 recipients tested, payments totaling $680 were paid for transportation services in the months following the people’s deaths.
While the auditors said DSS made no attempt to recover the money, department officials said funds were partly or entirely retrieved in four cases.
