HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) _ Trial is under way in Hartford Superior Court for a blogger arrested two years ago after urging readers to “take up arms” against Connecticut lawmakers.
The first witness Thursday is David Bednarz, deputy press secretary for Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy. Bednarz was deputy press secretary for the House Democratic Caucus in 2009 when the alleged threats were made.
Turner, who is representing himself at the trial, says the prosecution is an assault on his First Amendment rights.
He said in a pretrial hearing Wednesday that he is being prosecuted for making negative comments about gay people.
The North Bergen, N.J., resident is already serving a nearly three-year prison sentence for making death threats against federal judges in Illinois.
