National Guard Engineer Detachment To Leave For Afghanistan

Seven members of the 246th Engineer Detachment of the Connecticut National Guard leave Windsor Locks Monday for additional training before leaving for Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Members of the unit provide fire prevention and protection. . . aircraft crash and rescue and hazardous materials responses.

This is the unit’s first deployment overseas,  but in recent weeks,  they have deployed to help victims of Tropical Storm Irene here  in the state.  Last year they pumped flood water at the Jewett City Sewage Treatment plant,   and in February the members removed snow from Naugatuck High School.
