Fugitive Calls Police To Say He’s Okay, After Jumping Into River

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (AP) _ Police say a Middletown man fleeing officers jumped into the Connecticut River to avoid being captured.

Police say Brandon Drake was wanted on numerous warrants, including assault charges.

The 21-year-old Drake ran when an officer saw him early Sunday morning. A chase followed and Drake ran onto Route 9, forcing traffic to stop. Authorities say Drake jumped into the nearby river, which prompted a search by police and the Fire Department by boat.

Police said Drake’s mother contacted him by phone and allowed officers to speak with him.

He told officers he was safe but would not disclose his location.

Authorities say he may be injured as a result of the chase.
