Police: Explosion Was A Suicide Attempt

West Hartford Police say a 72-year-old man was taken to the hospital for evaluation after he tried to take his own life by blowing up his vehicle Wednesday morning behind a business on Chelton Avenue.

Police say the man, despondent over financial issues, parked on the side of the roadway, closed the windows, opened the valve of a propane tank, and lit a match– causing an explosion. The blast occurred around 6:45 a.m.

Though the vehicle sustained heavy damage, the man sustained only minor injuries and was taken to Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center in Hartford.
