Heat Prompts Bridge Closing

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) _ New Haven city officials have closed the Grand Avenue Bridge because of problems related to the hot weather.

City officials say the swing bridge’s truss has expanded in the heat. That causes it to stick when it swings open to allow boat traffic on the Quinnipiac River to pass underneath.

Crews have had to call the fire department hose down the bridge to get it closed again.

The bridge will be closed from Wednesday through Friday so crews can shave an inch off the bridge and allow it to again swing freely.

The bridge is scheduled to be replaced in five years.
