Bridgeport Parents Move To Block State Takeover Of Schools

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP) _ A group of Bridgeport parents is asking a judge to block the state Department of Education from replacing the city’s school board.

The parents’ attorney filed paperwork this week in Bridgeport Superior Court to challenge the state’s decision to take over the schools, which followed a request by some school board members, administrators and Mayor Bill Finch.

The parents already had filed a request last month for an injunction against the school board to stop it from closing the city’s Dunbar School. They amended that complaint Monday to add the request to block the school board’s dismissal.

Attorney Josephine Miller says a court hearing has been scheduled July 21.
City leaders say the state takeover is needed because Bridgeport’s schools are hampered by budget problems, politics and poor student performance.
