A topping off ceremony was held today, for New Britain’s new $35-million dollar police station on Main Street.
Mayor Timothy Stewart says the new building will be state-of-the art, and larger than the old police station.
“Not a lot of private investors are coming out to spend millions of dollars in communities, especially urban communities, because where is your payback? It really isn’t there,” said Stewart. “We really took it on ourselves to stimulate our own economy.”
Stewart says the old building had asbestos problems, and contained empty facilities for a court that was once in the same building as the old police department.
Stewart says the old building will probably be demolished and sold, after the new police department opens.
The new building is expected to be occupied and in full operation by December of 2012.
