Murder Charge Filed In Newlywed’s Death

NORWICH, Conn. (AP) _ Prosecutors have filed a murder charge against a Norwich man who says he accidently shot his wife in 2009, three weeks after they were married.

Chihan “Eric” Chyung had been facing a manslaughter charge. He told city police that he was putting his handgun into a suitcase after hours of arguing with his wife when it fired by accident in their home on June 2, 2009.

Forty-six-year-old Paige Bennett died from a gunshot to her head.

The Norwich Bulletin reports that during a court appearance Thursday, prosecutor David Smith said an evaluation of the evidence, including newly obtained results of forensic tests, warranted the upgraded charge.

Defense attorney Brian Woolf told the newspaper that he doesn’t think the state has “a scintilla of evidence” that the shooting was intentional.
